Families
Our Approach
Family therapy deals with personal relationships within the immediate family unit. Each family comes with its strengths, values, history, make-up, and ultimately, challenges. After understanding what makes your family tick and what has led to your family’s conflict or breakdown, we will collaborate on a treatment plan which is focused on goals, practical strategies and skills, and inclusion of all family members. Through treatment, families can learn to improve their communication and connect through the building of strong long-lasting bonds.
Reunification therapy, also known as reconciliation or reintegration therapy, is a type of family therapy that focuses on improving parent-child relationships after a separation or divorce. Families may experience a disconnect during high conflict periods pre- or post-separation or divorce, which may cause relationship strain or communication challenges between parent(s) and child. The goal of reunification therapy is to bring family members together and help restore fractured relationships. Oak Tree Therapy will focus on helping parents and children communicate and connect through talk therapy, exercises and games, and strategies to implement in the home to improve attachment and increase bonding.
Based on the issues being targeted, family group sessions may be augmented by one-on-one sessions.
Some of the issues that families seek therapy for are:
- Addiction
- Couples and marriage counseling
- Depression
- Grief
- Life transitions
- Mental illness
- Separation and divorce
- Trauma and PTSD
- Violence
Therapy Approaches
Just as with individual adult treatments, for families and couples we offer traditional talk therapy approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). We also offer modern-day approaches like trauma-based therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) in dealing with traumatic memories and experiences, addiction, grief and loss, depression, anxiety, phobias, and other areas. For families with young children, we utilize attachment-based therapies to assist parents in enhancing their connection to their child and in understanding how their own personality impacts their connection and interaction with others.
