How Does it Work?

We are here to help you and your family navigate the world of counselling and therapy. Our goal is to facilitate healing and growth, in a nurturing environment, with treatment focused on the appropriate age category and needs.

Step 1:

Schedule your Consultation

Contact us by phone, through our website, or over email. We’ll then book you in for an initial assessment at a time convenient to you. We offer video call appointments, as well as optional in-person ones. Based on our schedule, we aim to connect with all new clients within two weeks of initial contact, or after funding approval for referrals.

Step 2:

We Create a Treatment Plan

After getting to know one another at the initial assessment, we’ll determine the most suitable therapy type for you going forward. This decision will be based on your particular needs (and preferences), and will also take your availability and coverage into account. Our treatment plan is a living document and will change as we progress through therapy sessions.

Step 3:

Sessions and Progress

Your therapist will continue to meet with you, working off of your treatment plan, and making adjustments along the way, as needed. We will take notes and put together a report at the end of each session. Be open and honest. Ask questions. Let your therapist know what you’re dealing with and if things are changing for you. We’re here to help!

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re new to therapy and counselling, or new to our Oak Tree Therapy family, welcome! We know you’ve probably got some questions in mind. We’ve answered those most frequently asked of us below. Have a read through, and if anything remains unclear, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Is Oak Tree Therapy open during COVID-19?

Yes, as an essential service, we absolutely are! During COVID-19, we’ve transitioned over to telehealth services and are planning to re-open our doors to those clients who would prefer to be seen in person. We’ve developed a number of protocols for in-person sessions to protect and honour the safety of our clinicians and clients.

What age groups does Oak Tree provide therapy for?

We work with all ages, from enfants (for attachment therapy, along with their care providers), all the way up to older generations. That’s one of the best parts of working within a multidisciplinary team, our therapists specialize in a variety of areas and can therefore work to support a larger population.

Does Oak Tree offer a sliding scale for payments?

Yes! Please visit Our Pricing page for more information!

Do you bill directly to insurance providers?

We provide direct billing to the Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) Program, Jordan’s Principle, and other agencies that have referred clients directly to us.

We do not bill employer or private insurance plans directly. You will therefore need to check with your insurance provider to see if our services are eligible for coverage through your plan and if so, submit your receipts directly to them.

How will I know if the therapist is right for me?

Finding the right fit between a client and therapist is vitally important. You are dedicating time and resources and want to be sure you are a good match. Consider logistical factors, like office location and the therapist’s availability, as well as factors like their training, areas of expertise, personality, and ‘the feel’ you get when meeting. An initial phone conversation can help sort out some of these factors, but sometimes you have to be in a room with someone before you truly have a feel for the person. The first couple of face-to-face sessions can continue to inform your decision and you can talk about any ongoing reservations or concerns you might have.

Does Oak Tree offer telehealth therapy?

With the arrival of COVID-19 and the resulting closure of offices and a move away from in-person therapy sessions, we’ve successfully transitioned to telehealth therapy using a video platform. We’ve received positive feedback from our clients so far!

We find that face-to-face interactions over video allow clients to get a better read on their therapist as they interact, allowing them to be more comfortable, and also helps the therapist provide more appropriate feedback and assessments. Seeing each other, even if over video, is the most effective practice at Oak Tree Therapy. Alternately, where clients don’t have access to the Internet or a device with the video platform, we may provide phone sessions.

Do you have any openings? Can I be added to your waitlist?

We are usually able to see clients within two weeks of their funding being approved. For clients paying out-of-pocket, they will typically be seen within two weeks of contacting us. We strive not to have a waitlist at Oak Tree, but rather to schedule each client for their requested care at the next available opening.

How often will I meet with my therapist?

The frequency of your appointments will depend upon your initial assessment, treatment plan, and the type of therapy you are participating in. Most clients meet with their therapists on a weekly basis, which allows for a good pace.

How long does it take to receive a report from my therapist?

Your therapist will be able to provide you with your report within 2-3 weeks of your initial appointment. However, if you require a report sooner than that, please let your therapist know and they will do their best to accommodate your request.

Do you have Indigenous therapists? What about LGBTQ* therapists?

At Oak Tree Therapy we strive to have a diverse range of therapists. We therefore have a group of therapists that represent many differing cultural backgrounds, including Indigenous. We also have a group of therapists that represent many differing identities, including LGBTQ*.

Feel free to make a specific request when booking your initial assessment.
